I am a student at the present time and a friend gave me her older (1987) xscribe stenoram II machine. I have digicat software and need to know if this is compatible. If possible, how do I set up to write realtime? I have tried connecting just the cable and get nothing but 44444.... writing across the computer screen. Any advice?

Hi Kelli,
Are you using DigiCAT software or DigitalCAT software?
In many cases, the StenoRam II IS compatible with DigitalCAT. However, many users of newer and faster computers are finding that the StenoRam II does not work with their equipment. This is mainly due to a speed issue.
Because of this, it's basically trial & error as to figuring out if the SRII is compatible with your equipment.
If you are using DigitalCAT, from the 'Translation' menu, click no 'Steno Source'. Make sure the StenoRam is being used (also make sure it is on the correct Com port). Make sure "Grand Jean" is NOT checked either. Save your settings.
To start realtime, from the 'Translation' menu, choose 'Start Realtime'. This should open a new window that allows you to give your job a name. Name the job, and see if realtime works.
If you are local to us, feel free to schedule an appointment with me to have your equipment checked out. If you are not local, but would still like to send your equipment, just give me a call at our toll-free number 877-956-5198.
Good luck!
