I currently have a Ram II. I experience a long delay in the display when trying to Realtime. I really just want to be able to realtime for myself right now so I can improve my writing and possibly realtime for my church, but this won't work if I have to wait 2+ minutes for text to come up! Does anyone know anything about the Ultra? It's a reasonable price that I think I can swing right now, but I don't want to throw money away, either! If anyone knows anything about battery cost and replacement, ribbons, etc. I would appreciate the info.
Thanks for your imput.

Hello Cynthia,
What CAT software are you realtiming to? This alone can make the difference in the realtime delay.
If you are using 2001 (Xscribe), then the StenoRam II has a known issue with realtiming. There is a setting that can be adjusted that might allow realtime to come up quicker.
The StenoRam Ultra normally does not have the delay of the StenoRam II. However, the StenoRam Ultra uses a ribbon cartridge which is no longer being made. If you are going to purchase a StenoRam Ultra, then you will not be able to write to paper. (just something to keep in mind).
Let me know what CAT software you are using though and perhaps I can be of more help.
Best Regards,

I use the StenoRam Ultra with Eclipse. It works great. The Steno Doctor here in California still sells the ink cartridges. He will drill a hole in the cartridge so that you can ink the ribbon. He did say, though, that the cartridges are no longer being made. I just sold one of my StenoRam Ultras and bought a used Stentura 8000 because they're so much lighter.

I am glad to know about the ribbon cartrige, altho I'm beginning to wonder why I keep saving all my paper notes! I am using TurboCat software. So frustrating to not be able to work on realtime without spending much $$! I need to get my kids through college before I can start spending thousands of dollars on my equipment, new software, but want to be ready with my writing when it's time! I'll keep an eye out for a Stentura. Any thoughts on the StenoRam III? Thanks

Hello Cynthia,
Yes, ribbon cartridges can be refilled (you can refill them on your own as well). As for the StenoRam III, it is a good writer that writes to both disk and memory. But the nicest part is it uses just a standard ribbon (unlike the StenoRam III+ and Ultra which use the discontinued ribbon cartridge). Because of this I would value the StenoRam III higher than the III+ and Ultra.

I have Xscribe 2001 and use the Ram I writer. I need to do realtime/livenote with timestamping. Will this writer do it? If not, what do I need? Thanks, Magic

Hello winfieldrose,
This article was pulled from the Stenograph Help Desk located at http://www.stenograph.com:
[PROBLEM]
What writers support timestamping in 2001?
[SOLUTION]
2001 v. 4.5 and 5.0 and also earlier versions support timestamping under certain conditions.
The Ultra has a toggle in its setup for using timestamps. If the option is turned on, timestamps are recorded within the note file and will show up in 2001 in any future translation from that note file *if* in translate options "Use Timestamp" in set to Y. 2001 ONLY supports timestamps in note files from the Ultra.
For ALL other writers 2001 can create timestamps during realtime ONLY using the computer clock. Timestamps must be enabled in translate options. The timestamps only exist in the .TRF file created during realtime. If the notes are retranslated, the timestamps will be lost.
This basically says that only a StenoRam Ultra can write timestamps in 2001.

I was reading about the StenoRam Ultra did you say that you will not be able to write to paper even if you drill the hole in the cartridge, etc?

Hi Latonia, In answer to your questions, if you can successfully drill the hole in your ribbon cartridge without damaging the ribbon inside, then I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to write to paper. You will need to fill the cartridge with ink (which can take a couple days since you can only add a small amount of ink at a time). We have the paper for sale on our shopping cart. We also sell the StenoRam Ultra charger. We have them availble for $34.88. You can also find them on our shopping cart. Browse to our website at www.jmsteno.com Click on "Shop Online" from the menu on the left. Or you can go directly there by clicking here: www.jmsteno.com/vindex.htmUnder the "Writers & Parts" menu, click on "Chargers" to find the chargers. Or click on "Steno Paper" to find paper for the writer. Hope that helps!

I have looked through my hand book and i know it sounds really stupid but I have no idea about a # sign on my steno machine. Anybody no what I am talking about? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Hello Boman,
The "#" you are referring to is actually your number bar (the long bar located above your letter keys). While in scroll mode, this should take you to the top of your file.
Hope the helps!
For future reference, you should add a "New Thread" when posting a new question under the forum. Once you click on the "StenoRam III, III+, Ultra" thread, you will find a "New Thread" button located on the right of your screen. Click on that to start a new thread.
