Is there a way to make TurboCAT 6.5 run under Windows XP Professional without having to add third-party software such as VMware? I understand TC is a DOS-based program but I hear from others that their "compatibility" mode can be made to work. Any ideas? I would be limiting my HD to 120 GB also. Thank you for your consideration on this issue.

Hello Richard,
Well for starters (and I'm sure you already know this) running TurboCAT on Windows XP is not supported by Cheetah International. I have heard from other professionals in the computer field that all DOS-based programs can be made to work via a "compatibility mode", however I have yet to see TurboCAT be run on Windows XP. If you know someone who is running TurboCAT on Windows XP, I would be interested to know their setup. Most people don't understand that TurboCAT is a very specific software program that utilizes a lot of DOS-based resources and memory configurations. Because of this, I would not expect to get TurboCAT running on Windows XP. Even if you could get TurboCAT to load on Windows XP, the chances of all of the functions in TurboCAT working (such as AudioLink, Dictionary Editor, etc.) are slim.
Hope that helps. If you are having trouble finding a computer to run TurboCAT on, drop me an e-mail to technical@jmsteno.com. We do sell computers that are compatible with TurboCAT (running Windows 98SE).

TurboCAT 6.5 runs just fine on XP systems using VMWare Workstation 4.0 and beyond. Ensure you have a legacy serial port on your XP system if you want to realtime. This effectively resolves the issue with XP.
Hope this helps!

And after extensive testing you will probably be limited to a 1.6 MGHZ or slower processor. Even with VMWare, TC still as issues with processors faster than this. Especially if you go out and purchase a new laptop.

I have set up a laptop for a court reporter in dual-boot mode (Win98se & XP Home) on a Dell 600m (1.6MHZ) machine. Loaded Cheetah TurboCAT 6.5 on the Win98SE OS and the software will not recognise the software key. The LPT1 port is set to BiDirectional. The laptop will print thru the key to a LaserJet 4+. Both partitions are formatted in FAT32. Any ideas? I was thinking about converting the XP partition to NTFS. Or trying to get VM Ware Workstation 4.0 (as I saw on another post). Ideas? Thanks, Patrick

It sounds like you have an older key. You may need a key replacement as the older keys do not work on the newer hardware. Unfortunately, if your CR is not on service with Cheetah it will cost them a couple hundred bucks to get a replacement key. High price for having paid for the software.
You do not want to move the XP side of the dual boot to NTFS as this would convert the hole drive and you would not be able to run Win 98.

Just wanted to reiterate Lee's response here. The older security devices tend not to work on computers approximately 300MHz or faster (This is just a general speed. It could vary between computers). Last I heard Cheetah charges $190 for the newer key plus $20 shipping.
Personally I would keep both partitions FAT32. That way you can still *see* your Cheetah files even when on the XP partition.
