Does anyone know if stenocat 4.1 will run under Windows 98 SE and if so are there any tips or tricks to be aware of when installing and configuring?
thanks

I have not specifically tried StenoCat 4.1 on Windows 98, but I have tried 4.6 on Windows 98 (which worked just fine).
A bigger limitation you might run into is the speed of the computer. I would keep the MHz under 233. Anything faster you will probably run into problems with. And more specifically, when you try to open a DOS-based window (such as the edit screen or realtime), it will simply open and then close immediately, thus not giving you the full functionality of the system.
If you need more help, feel free to write me at technical@jmsteno.com

Hi, I'm a Stenocat 4.1 user. I recently purchased a Tecra 8000 333 mhz. Stenocat does run on this computer except for the realtime. I use Moslo to open realtime, but it is not accepting any input from my Stenoram II. Sometimes I receive a Can't Initialize Writer error. In the Read Steno progam, it will read steno and then translate so the port is working. Any suggestions? Thank you.

1. Writer not initializing in Real Time and Read Notes. If the message "Writer Initialization Failed" comes up immediately, use these steps. If the message "Writer Initialization Failed" comes up after a few seconds, then these steps do NOT apply. Basically, in Windows, a new setting has been introduced on some laptop computers. This setting is referred to as "Power Management". It is used to preserve battery power. If this setting is on, then it may disable your Com 1 port (in order to save power). This feature needs to be turned off. NOTE: Modifying the Windows Registry can be very dangerous if done incorrectly. Be extremely careful following the steps below. If you are not comfortable with these steps, please consult a computer technician. Click on start Click on run Type in "regedit" and hit enter Click on the plus sign next to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Click on the plus sign next to "System" Click on the plus sign next to "CurrentControlSet" Click on the plus sign next to "Services" Click on the plus sign next to "VXD" Click on the yellow folder called "VCOMM" (scroll down a little) On the right double click on "Enable Power Management" Double click on 01 and change it to 00. They should all be 0's now. Click OK. Click on the "X" and close down regedit REBOOT Check real time This solution turns "Power Management" off.
