Can someone help me get realtime running w/a Stentura 8000 and Xscribe 2001? Just purchased a used writer. Previously had a Stenoram III. Have realtime cable hooked up. Still getting "unable to communicate" message.

Hi Janet,
Lets start by getting a little more information from you. Please answer the following questions:
- Do you have a Stentura 8000 or Stentura 8000LX writer? - How are you communicating with the writer (e.g. Read from Cable, Disk, Realtime)? - How did you communicate with your StenoRam III? - What Operating System are you using (e.g. DOS 6.22, Windows 95)? - Can you give some basic information about your computer (processor type and speed)?
Hopefully we can get this worked out for you. Keep in mind the Stentura realtime/dumping cable is a different cable then your StenoRam III cable. You can not purchase them at local cable stores like Radio Shack. You might want to see if realtime works on someone else's system if possible.

Michael,
Thanks 4 your reply. I have found a reporter that has accomplished realtime w/this writer and software, so we're going to try to get it going. If not successful, I'll try to answer all your questions. I appreciate very much your time!

Michael, Thanks for your offer of help. Really do need it now for sure. Tried to get friends 8000lx writer to work with software -- got realtime screen to open but no words or steno would appear. I have a Stentura 8000, version 3.0. Previously used a StenoramIII to write realtime w/2001 5.0. Settings were for stenoram direct, com 1, using a realtime cable. Used many computers at dif. times ... current one has only dos 6.22, and is a 486sx. Don't know processor type and speed, but if you can tell me how to figure that out, I'll try (u can see i'm not real computer savvy). Got a realtime cable w/the writer. Have tried I think every permutation of writer selection on computer and mode selection on writer, and no luck, chuck . I'm very frustrated, and just using stenoramIII so I can realtime, but I like the touch on stentura 8000 so much better, and want to get this to work.

Hi Janet,
When I get some extra free time (hopefully in the next two days) I'll install a copy of Xscribe 2001 (I have v4.5 which is still similar to 5.0) and test one of our Stentura 8000's out on it. Once it's safe to say it is compatible then we can check some more computer settings. For now, since your StenoRam III was using Com1, use the following settings:
Writer Type: SmartWriter Com: Com1
Have the Stentura 8000 connected to the computer and turned on before starting realtime in Xscribe 2001. Press a few strokes on the writer to start the job. After the strokes appear on your Stentura LCD (either Steno or English), then start realtime in Xscribe. Allow for up to 20 seconds for the computer to establish a connection.
If you are familiar with any infrared settings on your computer (if at all), you will want to disable those as well.
Let me know if that works for you or not and I'll keep you updated on my test results.

Hi Janet,
Just wanted to let you know that testing this system is still on my "To-Do" list. It's been a very busy week but the workload is finally slowing down so I hope to test this soon for you.

Hi Janet,
I was able to get a bit of testing done on the following system:
Toshiba Tecra 8000 MS DOS 6.22 Xscribe 2001 v4.5 Stentura 8000
Realtime works fine on this system. There is a small delay starting realtime (which is common with 2001), however everything else worked just fine.
Therefore we know that the Stentura 8000 is compatible with 2001 at least using MS-DOS 6.22.
When I get more time, I will see if the Stentura 8000 is compatible with 2001 using Windows 98SE. Please let me know if you are interested in a system such as this.

Hi Janet,
This is an addendum to my previous testing. Here is the test system:
Toshiba Tecra 8000 Windows 98SE Xscribe 2001 v4.5 Stentura 8000
Realtime works perfectly. Was able to write 1000+ strokes to the system without error.
So now that we know that the Stentura is compatible for realtime in Xscribe 2001, next step is getting you up and running. Please email me at computers@jmsteno.com if you would like further help on this.
